Anquetin fue amigo de Van Gogh y Toulouse Lautrec. A partir de 1882 destaca en París como un innovador del lenguaje posimpresionista y junto a Bernard fue uno de los pioneros del Cloisonnisme. Sus temas preferido fueron los paisajes urbanos, las escenas de café y las mujeres hermosas. En los años finales del siglo XIX cambia su estilo y se inclina por una pintura monumental con tendencia barroca e inspirada en Rubens fundamentalmente y, por tanto, más tradicional.

Tras estudiar en Amberes, se establece en Londres en 1870. Se le puede considerar uno de los pintores más famosos del periodo victoriano tardío; se especializó en la representación de escenas históricas, primero de la Edad Media y más tarde de la Antigüedad, cuando visitó los restos romanos de Pompeya. Sus pinturas ofrecen una visión de la Grecia y la Roma antiguas: en ellas representa bellas mujeres y preciosas escenografías, llenas de mármoles. Emana de ellas una gran sensualidad. En 1899 se le concedió un título nobiliario y en 1905 recibió la Orden del Mérito Británica. Alma Tadema tuvo, gracias a su éxito, algunos imitadores como John William Godward y Edwin Long. Su obra cayó en desgracia tras su muerte y sólo recientemente ha vuelto a ser reconocido como un gran pintor.

Got his first drawing lessons at the end of the sixties from the well-known painter Jacobus Koeman in Bergen aan Zee. In the seventies he was member of Teekengenootschap Pictura, in Dordrecht. He got painting lessons from G.E. Meertens, and from J. Van Kesteren. He studied philosophy in Leiden, the Netherlands, under Nuchelmans and van Peursen, and he worked as a painter in the eighties with occasional exhibitions. In spite of this background he considers himself to be an autodidact. After a successful business and science career and a single-handed sailing trip to the Azores in the year 2000 he decided to take up art seriously. He visited the Vrije Academie in The Hague were he got lessons from Ed van der Kooy, Pien Hazenberg en Marijke Verhoef. Since then he has developed his own style of painting. Using multiple layers of acrylics paint he creates large radiant canvasses in his characteristic robust handwriting. These paintings are greatly appreciated by a select group of admirers.
He was research assistent of Fresco for a while with the study of the philosophical estate of the well known Dutch philosopher and poet Johan Adreas Dér Mouw (1863-1919) as a special assignment. In 1983 he graduated and started to work as a software developer, and later service manager for Buro Microsoftware. In 1985 he became general manager of Compu'Disc and later general manager of Info'Products Informatica Diensten. He has been active in research in the areas of artificial intelligence and relational database systems since 1984. He and his business partner, Dolf Zantinge, founded Syllogic B.V. in 1989. In 1992 Adriaans received a PhD in computer science at the University of Amsterdam, where he is now a part-time professor in machine learning/artificial intelligence since 1998. Dolf and Pieter sold Syllogic to Perot Systems (www.perotsystems.com) in 1997, and stayed on as managing directors - a transaction which officially included time off for Pieter to sail the Singlehanded TransAtlantic Race 2000. For this race he developed the Syllogic Sailing Lab the most advanced open 40 racing yacht currently around (www.robosail.com). He is now advisor of Robosail Systems, a company that manufactures and sells selflearning autopilots, as well as senior research advisor for Perot Systems Corporation. Adriaans is member of the ICGI (International Conference on Grammar Induction) steering committee.

Andrea Appiani (May 31, 1754-November 8, 1817), was an Italian neoclassical painter, the best fresco painter of his time. He was born at Milan.

He had been intended to follow his father's career in medicine but instead entered the private academy of the painter Carlo Maria Giudici (1723–1804). He received instruction in drawing, copying mainly from sculpture and prints. He studied Raphael through the engravings of Marcantonio Raimondi, as well as the work of Giulio, Anton Raphael Mengs and, again from prints, the compositions in Trajan's Column. He then joined the class of the fresco painter Antonio de' Giorgi (1720–93), which was held at the Ambrosiana picture gallery in Milan, where he was able to study Raphael's art directly from the cartoon of The School of Athens and the work of Leonardo's followers, particularly Bernardino Luini. He also frequented the studio of Martin Knoller, where he deepened his knowledge of painting in oils; and he studied anatomy at the Ospedale Maggiore in Milan with the sculptor Gaetano Monti (1750–1847). His interest in aesthetic issues was stimulated by the classical poet Giuseppe Parini, whom he drew in two fine pencil portraits.
In 1776 he entered the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera to follow the painting courses of Giuliano Traballesi, from whom he received a mastery of the fresco technique and the encouragement to make copies after Domenichino. However, Correggio was his primary model, and his best pieces, which are in the church of San Maria presso San Celso and the royal palace at Milan, almost rival those of his great master.
He was made pensioned artist to the Kingdom of Italy by Napoleon, but lost his allowance after the events of 1814 and fell into poverty. During his stint as court painter he rendered portraits of Napoleon and the chief personages of his regime. Among the most graceful of his oil paintings are his Venus and Love, and Rinaldo in the garden of Armida. He is known as "the elder", to distinguish him from his great-nephew Andrea Appiani (1817-1865), an historical painter at Rome. Other painters of the same name were Niccolo Appiani (fl. 1510) and Francesco Appiani (1704-1792)
He died at Milan on November 8, 1817.

Born in Kerala, India in the year 1945, the young Arakkal lost both his parents as a child. Literally to the manor born, his early life had every conceiveable comfort with the exclusion of parental love. Possesed by a burning desire to be an artist, he enrolled at the Karnataka Chitrakala Parishat, Bangalore, just to get a formal education although he was already a good artist. His early years of struggle to establish himself, his sensitivity to the social environment, the loss of human dignity in the face of harsh reality and a longing for peace have led him to say, "There is an anguished being, disturbed and in distress somewhere deep inside me. A human being who yearns for a meaningful existence. It is the human presence that arouses my attention and stirs my creative inner space. I have been committed through my work, seeking a definition of human situations."

Painter, graphic artist. In his youth he lived in Mariupol. In 1920 he immigrated to Harbin , and was a student of M.A. Kichigin and A.A. Bernardacci at 'Lotos' studio. In 1925 he arrived at San Francisco. He was a student of G. Piezoni, R. Stackpole and L. Randolf at California Art School . )

In 1929-1931 he worked under the direction of D. Rivera in Mexico . He worked in genre of easel painting and graphic, made some personal exhibitions in San Francisco , Stockton , and Stanford. He participated in international exhibitions in New York and San Francisco . He was a lecturer of California Art School (in the beginning of the 1930s), of Stanford University (since 1936).

He was an Honoured Professor of Stanford University (1961), and Chairman of Russian-American Society of Helping the Red Army (1941-1945). In 1950 he belonged to Graphic Workshop Group in San Francisco , which united the left-wing artists. In 1963 he returned to the USSR and was naturalized. He realized some monumental projects (mosaics on the front of the House of Communications, panel 'From Scythians to Space'). During the last years he painted pictures on political themes.)

The pictures of this author are in collections of N.S. Khrushchov, G.Titov, A. Moiseev, M.Rostropovich, the Bolshoi Theatre, Russian Museum , in museums of the city of Zhdanov , Volgograd , Kiev and so on.

J’ai, depuis mon enfance, été attiré par le dessin, essentiellement le portrait. J’ai effectué à 15 ans quelques tentatives à la gouache en recopiant des peintures de grands classiques.J’ai ensuite arrêté de peindre et de dessiner pendant près de 20 ans.
Depuis l’année dernière je me suis remis à peindre en « attaquant » la toile qui m’avait jusque là impressionné. J’ai alors essayé de sortir de monréflexe de « copie » tout en m’appuyant sur un « existant » mais en l’interprétant à ma façon. En voici le résultat…"

James Carroll Beckwith (September 23, 1852 - October 24, 1917) was an American portrait painter.
He was born at Hannibal, Missouri, on 23 September 1852. He studied in the National Academy of Design, New York City, of which he afterwards became a member, and in Paris (1873-1878) under Carolus Duran. Returning to the United States in 1878, he gradually became a prominent figure in American art.
He took an active part in the formation of The Fine Arts Society, and was president of the National Free Art League, which attempted to secure the repeal of the American duty on works of art. Among his portraits are those of W. M. Chase (1882), of Miss Jordan (1883), of Mark Twain, T. A. Janvier, General Schofield and William Walton. He decorated one of the domes of the Manufactures Building at the World Columbian Exposition, Chicago, 1893.

Rituali figurati, tableaux vivants, neogotiche pale d'altare per i misteri di una oscura religione. La critica si è sbizzarrita per trovare definizioni che diano un'idea della pittura di Saturno Buttò veneziano, nato a Portogruaro nel 1957.
Si iscrive nel 1971 al liceo artistico di Venezia e successivamente all'Accademia di Belle Arti, diplomandosi al corso di pittura nel 1980. Se si eccettua il decennio legato agli studi, Saturno non lascia mai Bibione, cittadina veneta sul mare, dove vive e lavora.
L'artista sostiene sempre con convinzione l'importanza avuta dall'esperienza veneziana per la sua formazione; il liceo lo inizia al disegno classico ed evidenzia quella che è sempre stata una sua vocazione: la figura. E' un periodo questo di continuo lavoro a matita su carta, in cui non esistono variazioni al rigore monocromatico dei disegni, eccetto una timida comparsa (nell'ultimo anno di liceo) di velature ad acquerello, preludio forse al clima più vivace dell'accademia a cui Saturno approda dopo la maturità artistica nel 1976.
Paradossalmente è proprio l'atmosfera di totale libertà d'espressione che lo convince ad abbandonare, anche se temporaneamente, matite e pennelli a favore di "nuove tecniche" come film, fotografia e varie esperienze legate alle correnti artistiche più in voga in quegli anni quali Body Art e Conceptual Art...
Non cambia però l'interesse per l'elemento umano, che se al liceo viene vissuto in chiave prevalentemente oggettivo anatomico, con l'accademia la ricerca si sposta sul soggetto, sul carattere e le sue implicazioni psicologiche. La "fusione " delle due esperienze determina a partire 1980 (anno dei ritorno a tecniche artistiche più tradizionali) la linea che caratterizzerà anche in seguito tutta l'arte di Saturno: una pittura di forte impatto realistico, basata sul disegno e improntata al tema dei ritratto.
Il successivo decennio si connota per una costante ricerca di perfezionamento della tecnica ad olio che viene interpretata con gusto dei tutto personale che lo condurrà allo stile unico delle tavole degli anni novanta.
Nel 1993 espone per la prima volta in pubblico e pubblica il catalogo monografico "Ritratti da Saturno 1989-1992".

Poetessa e pittrice irlandese, Louisa Grace Bartolini nacque da famiglia nobile a Dublino nel 1818 e fu educata in Francia. Dopo un primo viaggio nel 1837, si stabilì in Italia nel 1839 e nel 1841 si trasferì a Pistoia dove nel 1860 sposò l’ingegnere Francesco Bartolini. Amica di molti letterati italiani (fra cui Fucini e Carducci), tenne salotto nella sua casa a Pistoia. Coltivò con interesse la pittura e la musica, ma fu conosciuta soprattutto per la sua attività letteraria. Scrisse versi, pubblicati in varie occasioni, ed alcuni raccolti, tradusse dall’inglese i “Canti di Roma antica” dello storico Thomas B. Macaulay (1800-1859) e alcuni scritti del poeta statunitense Henry W. Longfellow (1807-1882), oltre a altri testi di autori minori. La sua opera di traduttrice le valse l’amicizia di Giosué Carducci, che conobbe nel 1860, quando questi venne a Pistoia ad insegnare greco e poi latino ed italiano al Liceo Forteguerri e con il quale rimase in corrispondenza (il carteggio completo, formato da 69 lettere, è stato pubblicato a cura di Rita Gaspari, a Pistoia nel 2001 dalla Libreria dell’Orso). Louisa Grace Bartolini morì a Pistoia nel 1865.
