John Michael Carter
John Michael Carter was born in Chicago, Illinois. He began his first studies in drawing at the age of 16 with his father E.L. Carter, a commercial artist. In 1968, he attended the Art Center College of Design. There he received a background in the major classical schools of painting and graduated with a B.F.A. degree in 1972. For ten years, Mr. Carter taught across the country including the Scottsdale Artist School, the Dallas Arts League and the Arts Club of Cincinnati.Since 1975, he has had 37 one-man shows. He has exhibited with Grand Central Gallery in New York; the Gilcrease Museum in Tulsa, Oklahoma; the Amarillo Art Center, Amarillo, Texas; the Deville Gallery in Los Angeles, California; J. Todd Gallery, Wellesley, Massachusettes; and the Meyer Gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Recently, his image of “The Yellow Canary” was awarded the Grand Prize at the 2004 Oil Painters of America Exhibit. He has also been the recipient of many awards in international portrait competitions, including recognition by the Portrait Society of America. In 1988, he was one of the top four award winners at the Arts for the Parks competition and he was one of 50 artists selected to show at the 1991 Hubbard Museum, Award of Excellence Exhibit.Mr. Carter currently paints fulltime in a studio near the workshop where his wife Barbara, handcrafts gilded frames for original paintings. He paints for several originals galleries, national shows, and special corporate and personal commission projects.
